Rustic Beach Coffee Table

This is a coffee table that I came up with for a customer back in late/summer fall.  I really enjoy building coffee tables because there are a million different styles and shapes. This one was to be paint grade and since I hate to paint I left the painting up to the customer.  The look they wanted was a rustic/beach feel, they gave me a few pictures of tables they liked and this is what I came up with. I also go an unusual request for a “secret” cigar drawer lined with cedar, although I think it just ended up being a remote control drawer instead.

This table is made 100% from reclaimed and recycled lumber!

Custom Handplanes

I recently finished an order for a set of two pairs of matching Handplanes. The customer was having a baptism ceremony for his two sons. He wanted a matching set to be given to a godfather and godson as a matching pair.  I thought this was a really cool gift idea and was excited to make the matching sets!
This is what I came up with!

While I was in the process of making hand planes I thought that I would make a few more. I had recently reclaimed some old redwood planks off a job and wanted to use it in my next bunch of handplanes.

The Raw Supplies:
Reclaimed Redwood

Left-over Mahogany Scraps From the Pulpit

The Process:

Laminate the Blanks and Create the Shapes

Custom Knife Scales (Handle Grips)

I always love when people come up with interesting custom projects. They always take more time than I expect and I usually don’t make money on them, but I enjoy the creative challenge.
I was recently asked to make some custom knife scales (Handle cover for a knife) I really enjoyed this project and really like the way it came out. The wood i used for the handles has been the gift that keeps on giving. My friend brought a pile of rough lumber over and asked if I could help him make a tabletop out of it. I said sure I can help which turned into me doing most of the work and him doing A lot of sanding. Once we surfaced some of the wood we found some beautiful grains and colors. All he the guy he bought it from only said it was from Brazil, so I refer to it as the mystery brazilian wood. When we finished he gave me some left over pieces and i have been incorporating the leftovers into some of the cutting boards. For this project I was able to use some scraps from the cutting board to make the handles. It was nice to use every last piece of the wood.

Wednesday Market

Well I have been really busy making a Pulpit for a church in Capitola, so I did not make anything new and exciting to come down to the market with me today, but I will be down there. Along with making the pulpit I sold one of my favorite skateboards (rising sun deck)  so I was able to hire a new Shop Helper!

"Shop Assistance"

Custom Pulpit

I was recently commissioned to create a pulpit for Capitola Community Church. I was really excited for this unique opportunity, how often do you get to build a pulpit? They really wanted it took look clean and simple without too much flash. I really enjoyed build this piece there were a few design challenges that I had to overcome, but I am happy with the end result!

Makers Market Wednesdays

Wooden pirate swords are some of the first thing that I learned how to make as a young boy. They are also on the first thing I sold/traded. I remember when I was about 10 years old I was allowed to use the band saw, and would use a template my dad made to make pirate swords.  I would make swords for the neighborhood kids too, and I would sell them or trade them for different toys.
My sister has three boys all of which love playing swords; I have made a lot of swords for them over the years. They recently moved back to Santa Cruz and they are already asking for more swords. This gave me the idea to make a couple to sell. These swords are built to last, my nephews are really tough on these ones I built them and they have held up great!

Approximately 20" long

After creating a the apple cutting board one of my friends suggested I make a egg plant cutting board as well, and here is what I came up with. Hope you like it.

Makers Market Wednesdays

Well it has been a busy week, but I will be at the Makers Market today from 1:30-6:30pm.
I have been working on a Pulpit for Capitola Community Church (pictures to come) so I was not able to finish any new projects for the market today. I do have a few new projects in the works though and I’m pretty excited about them!
The First one is a bike basket I have been thinking about making some kind of basket/rack for my bike for a while now.  One of my friends found one on the internet and suggested that I try to make some, which just confirmed that it was a good idea. I have a design in the works so it might be a couple weeks before I have a prototype for everyone to see.
My other idea is some pirate swords for kids.  One of the first things I started making when I was a kid was wooden pirate swords; I even sell them to the neighborhood kids.  I usually make them for my nephews and friends kids as presents these days.
Here is a picture of one of the ones I made for my nephew…  I would love some feedback on this would anyone be interested in something like this?

Makers Market - A Few New Cutting Boards and Hand Planes

On Saturday, my friend and I got up at 5:00 am for a little dawn patrol surf session.  After two hours and a little over 30 miles we didn’t find any surf. Eventually we ended up down the street from my house doing a little body boarding and handplaning, we ended up having a blast and our dawn patrol was save thanks to my trusty handplane! Since they were also the big seller at the Makers Market I made more!

I came up with a few new shapes this week that I’m really excited about! The ones that don’t sell they may end up in my personal quiver!
